With so many immigrants around the world have been landing in Canada every year, the Canada’ demographics has been changed apparently. you can see different faces and skin colors in the metropolitan areas such as Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal, and the visual-minorities are in streets everywhere. the cities are full of diversity and dynamics.

Our Chinese being in Canada has been long history, it can be retrospected to 150 years ago.The large number of Chinese came to Canada to build up the railway across the inland connecting the Pacific and the Atlantic. Afterward, the majority of these Chinese people settled down in Canada.

Since the early 1990s, Canada has been reopening the immigrating door to the outside world, many Chinese have been flooding into Canada for more than two decades legally and illeaglly, of which there are amount of mainlanders. They come to Canada as the name of skilled migrants or first sturdying in Canada’s universities then settling down after graduation.

Canada is a country of sparse population. there are not enough professional and skilled jobs provided for the people coming from the outside. So many newcomers have to face the survival challenges. some persist in sending their resumes to related the professional companies at home, some go back China unwillingly. but most people give up their former professional jobs in China and take the life challenges remolding their careers in Canada. Therefore, you can witness so many Chinese engaging in totally different jobs which they never do in China: plumbing, roofing, flooring, garding, welding, accounting, estate agent, insurance agent, resturants and so on, only you can name it.

In order to adapt to the society and survive in competition, we have to remold our career and turn round. During these transformation periods, some people suffer a lot hard time. but the Chinese old saying and traditional proverbs go to help them such as : “you only chop woods that the mountain has(上什么山砍什么柴)”, “ taking actions that suit local circumstances(因地制宜)”, and ” the survival of the fittest(适者生存) “. and the famous western proverb are also doing well : “When in Rome, do as Romans(入乡随俗) “.

A Chinese roofing businessman told me: “we are just trying to figure out what job occupations can fit me in the Canada business market that can cohabitate well with the social ecosystem and can survive through the lifetime work” , noting his ability, interest and money are the key factors to decide what to do.

Not only would such business help him make money and contribute his family having dignity life, It would also provide work opportunities for some fellow Chinese people and serve the communities with cheap prices, he added ” This business is seasonal job, I don’t think we could ever take it for granted for the whole year’ stable income,” he smiled, “We at least have some market requirements every year after many years’ striving and building up market brand,”

His business is one of stories that reflect the theme of ” Remolding career and Turning round gracefully
