Toronto – Weizhen Tang, 52, the most prominent Chinese Canadian Mayoral candidate in history is suspending his Mayoral campaign for two days, October 22 and October 23, 2010. “These are crucial campaign days, but I shall organize and support rallies in Toronto during the visit to Toronto, by the Dalai Lama. To protest the political, anti-China message of the Dalai Lama’s circle; and to encourage true peace and harmony between the peoples of Toronto, Canada, China and the world.

“ ‘To suspend my campaign.’ Some people laugh at my action.” Tang jumps up from his chair, in excitement. “But I remind Chinese community leaders that John McCain took the same action. On September 24, 2008, Presidential candidate McCain offered to suspend his campaign for a weekend summit with his opponent, Obama , to come together and discuss the economic crisis, to help the people of America and the world.

“In a sense, I am doing the same thing, I suppose. Suspending my political campaign for Mayor, in the name of a greater cause, to try to help the peoples of Toronto, Canada, China and the world! In this case, greater peace, understanding and outreach during the visit of the Dalai Lama to Toronto, this weekend of October 22-25, 2010.

“The Dalai Lama’s personal and religious message is good one: universal values such as compassion, forgiveness, tolerance, respect, dignity amongst all peoples. Sadly, the Dalai Lama and his messages are being used by others for political reasons, to create anti-China government feeling. But sadly, this anti-China government feeling can easily become anti-Chinese feelings.

“This anti-Chinese racism feeling is very, very similar to the months leading to the Beijing 2008 Olympics. Many people see and fear political violence against Chinese peoples.

“The anti-China government feeling leading up to the Beijing Olympics, was becoming anti-Chinese animus, racism. Seeing this frightening racism, I, Weizhen Tang, moved with other community leaders, to organize an April 13, 2008, rally to promote understanding and friendship between the peoples of Canada, China and the world.

“Our April 13, 2008, rally, on the steps of Parliament became one of the largest such world friendship rallies in the world,” notes Tang with a smile. “Like the Ottawa Beijing Olympics 2008 rally, our Toronto Dalai Lama rally should do peace and understanding between the peoples of Toronto, Canada, China and the world.
