Before end of the eighties in last century, almost nothing was recorded about “Chinese participating in government and political affairs” in Canada’s history. Policy-discrimination, white-supremacy, and Chinese-exclusion in the early time were prevalent and the major causes to exclude Chinese people to demonstrate their abilities at the stage of politics, those peripherized orientals were even not considered a significant political force in the early and latter-day history of Canada. Although in 1858, there were the first Chinese landing in British Columbia for Gold Rush, Chinese labors built up the world-famous transcontinental railroad between the Atlantic and The Pacific during 1880-1885, and quite a few of Chinese people settled down in Vancouver, and made the city more orientalized etc. Little or no notice was taken of these existence and contributions. At that time, Chinese remained invisible in the public politics and even in the history.

Almost throughout the twentieth century, this lack of visibility continued, despite the efforts of Chinese community and all kinds of organizations appeal for the mainstream society to pay attention to them. These organizations such as Equality Committee, like most of other races’ counterparts, challenged the white authorities and required justice for minorities, especially in Political rights.

In early 1980s, however, with lots of HongKong people moving to Canada, soon after a great number of skilled immigrants from mainland landing in this new continent, the whole population constitution in those big cities has been inevitably changed. Chinese gradually show a sense of politics aspect by actively taking part in political activities and elections. After many years’ persistent strive and learning the ropes, some HongKong candidates successfully won the local elections to be the Ward councillors, especially in the areas of Chinese and Asian residents.

Under the encouragement of HK candidates’ success, lots of skilled immigrants from mainland also throw themself into battle, and the numbers are more and more than the before. Despite taking part in public gathering, rising benefit suggestions for public facilities and reflecting resident’s problems to the city, these candidates are obligated to the public concerns, urban construction and civil matters, just as much of the mainstream candidates. the potentiality of Chinese also could-be a successful politican would be gradually waken up.
