In January 12, a 11-year-old Muslim girl alleged that she was attacked by a Asian young man who held a scissor on his hand trying to cut off her hijab while she was walking to school. Only several hours after the girl telling her school, the Toronto media including the newspapers and TVs reacted immediately and reported extensively. The Toronto police also got involved in right away to investigate the event, and characterized the attack as a hate crime. The three-level governments’ leaders, the Toronto mayor and the governor of Ontario province all jumped out to condemned such hate crime. In the afternoon of that day,Justin Trudeau, the federal Prime Minister of Canada, said before the media:  ”My heart goes out to the young girl who was attacked, seemingly for her religion. I can’t imagine how afraid she must have been, I want her and her family and her friends and community to know that is not what Canada is” . What a touching words! But on next Monday, after 3 days of conducting numerous interviews, the cutting hijab event developed dramatically, the Toronto police said : the reported hijab attack on 11-year-old  “did not happen”.

Undoubtedly, the truth of the matter was that the girl told a lie. There was no any Asian man who attacked the Muslin girl. In contrast to the beginning of the prompt reaction and extensive spread, all the leaders of the three local-level governments and the media kept in silence afterwards. No politicians stood up to appease the local residents, and no media continuously reported the reaction of the affected local community that were hurt by the hijab hoax.

With the 11-years-old girl parents’ scratching-like apology, the political leaders refused to ease the local dissatisfaction, even what the saying of  ” all Canadians lack of tolerance” came from Justin Trudeau’ mouth, and the media’s omission, the Chinese community was infuriated.

Because 70% of the residents along the street where hijab hoax happened are Canadian-Chinese. It was very clear that the attacker was alluded to a Chinese who became a scapegoat for no reason at all. That was seriously hurtful to Chinese community. Soon after, there were some Chinese gathering up spontaneously to protest the hijab hoax along the city hall streets and in Parliment Hill. They asked the politicans to stand out to comfort the victim and the local community. After no any response coming from the goverments, the protests went further. Up to February 28th, the protest activities had been spreading to other cities. There were 28 protests totally in the whole country. Although the event passed more than one and half month, the fallout has been going far away now.
The protests are on the way, there have been no or little reports on the media about this hot social issue. The mainstream public media play a shameful role in it. When the hijab hoax began, they were so excited and could not wait to tell the public. When the police said it did not happen, then they held their tongues collectively. When facing the surging Chinese protests, they turn a blind eye on, let alone any protests news appeared on newspapers and TVs. It seemed nothing happened.
Why don’t the political leaders and the media listen to Canadian-Chinese voices? What are the reasons for the political leaders and the media who would rather hear a Muslin girl’s murmuring cry than listen to the Chinese community’s tumultuous protesting shout? Out of question, The ballots are the key factor. There is known to all that Muslin people have high voting rates, almost over 70% voting rates in their population, and most of their ballots go to the same party or the same person. That is why the media and politicians curry favour with them. In contrast, Canadian-Chinese usualy pay little attention on the public events and politics issues. What they care about are only their self-interests such as money, house and child’s education, etc. Their voting rates are very low and ill-matches the title of the third large population in Canada. Although, the Canadians Chinese have a large number of population, the total amount ballots even are less than Muslin people’s . It is why the politicans and the meda take no account of, sometimes, even look down on Canadian-Chinese. As result, the Canadian-Chinese voices often have been ignored or passed over in silence.
For the politicians, They should listen to a variety of voices from the society. For the media, although they have their own opinions expressed on events and personalities, news of complete and unbiased facts should be reported. they should hold news impartial and to abide by the code of ethics in the press to tell the public what is going on in the society. Just as the old proverb saying: honesty is the best policy. But in this hijab hoax social issue, the politians and media held double standards treating difference races. The politicians needed more ballots to be partial to the Muslin community. The Canadian-Chinese less taking part in social activities gave the media an ignoring treatment.
There are two idioms in Chinese: looking without seeing, hearing without listening(视而不见,听而不闻).That were what the governments’ leaders and the media behaved to the Canadian-Chinese protest voices in the staged farce of the hijab hoax. It is very disappointed and painful to all the Canadian-Chinese. In order to change the status quo, and playing more important roles in the country, the society and community, The Canadian-Chinese must actively care about and participate in all society activities. Most importantly, we must vote in all kinds of elections.
The ballots are only way that the politicians and the media listen to our voices.
