The woman flower–Hedy Lamarr
Having the famous two titles of ”The world’s most beautiful woman” and ”The mother of Wi-Fi”, Hedy Lamarr, is known to the world as a glamorous and sexy actress in Hollywood and one of the greatest inventors in the realm of science, Her beauty had no parallel in Hollywood and Her scientific invention was comparable to Edison’s,Jobs’ and The Wright brothers’ . What a beautiful woman flower she was !
Lamarr was born in a rich Jewish family in 1914 in Vienna. Her father was a successful bank director, and her mother was a pianist who came from an upper-class Jewish family. Although her parents both came from Jewish, Lamarr was raised by her mother as a Christian. She had a rather calm childhood and got good education while as a child. She could perform the ballet and play the piano when she was 7 years old. She was sent to a girls school in Sweden at her school-going age. She showed his talent in math and got good jobs on all subjects.  By the time she was a teenager of her 16 years old, she broke off her studying in communications subject and drop out of school. She was fascinated by the film, Lamarr wanted to be famous as an actress. She returned to Berlin to work in the film industry, first as a script girl, and soon as an actress. Her first role was a bit part in the German film ”Money on the street” in 1930. She was so attractive and talented enough to appear in other three films in 1931.
It was her fifth film that catapulted Lamarr to worldwide fame. In 1932, she starred in a German film called “Ecstasy” and had made the shock move to be nude in the film. The film’s nude scenes created a sensation all over the world. The film , actually being tame and even saying nothing by today’s eyesight, was considered overly sexual and received negative publicity to be banned in USA and other countries at the time, even the Pope stood up to object the film.
In 1938, Lamarr went to Hollywood and made her American film debut in Algiers. She was so beautiful that created a “national sensation” . Her roles in Hollywood films fully matched with the anticipation of audiences, so she made a great success. According to an audience, when her face first appeared on the screen, “everyone gasped, … Lamarr’s beauty literally took our breath away”.
Because of her breathtaking beauty, since then in her future Hollywood films, she had been invariably typecast as an archetypal glamorous and sex goddess . At the height of her popularity, Lamarr starred in a series of exotic adventure epics in a number of chart topping films. Even in starry Hollywood, she also cut a striking figure.
Hedy Lamarr not only was a Hollywood famous actress, being beloved, being crushed on and making the public frenzy, but also was recognized a genius inventor in science. Her intellect rose above the common herd in Hollywood and her mind was so big like whales on the beach. Her off-screen life and personality was quite different from her screen image during her heyday. Although she had no formal training and was primarily self-taught, she worked in her spare time on various hobbies and inventions, which included an improved  traffic stoplight and a tablet that would dissolve in water to create a carbonated drink. After studying the aerodynamics of birds and shapes of fish, she presented a ideas to make the plane’s wings less square and more efficient.
During World War II, Lamarr developed a radio guidance system for American torpedoes. The radio guidance system used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming and tracking, which causing the torpedo to go off course and to be located. Lamarr succeeded her design by synchronizing a miniaturized player-piano with radio signals. Although the US Navy did not adopt her patent until the 1960’s, the principles of her invention are unarguably incorporated into Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, CDMA technology. Because of this, she was posthumously inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014 and holds a legacy as not only an actress, but also as an impactive inventor known for her creativity and affection to detail.
Lamarr was a symbol for both beauty and intellect. but her personal life was screwed up. She walked on the bump loving road, having 6 failed marriages and leaving 3 kids. After her last appearing in the film of “The Female Animal” in 1958, Lamarr then retired to Florida. She died lonely while the her living room’s TV was still on in her apartment, in the city of Casselberry, on January 19,2000.
Lamarr is a legend for the silver screen and for the scientific invention. For ordinary people, God only open either a door or a window for them, but Lamarr got both. If beauty is the gift of God, she did lots of hard work to study and invent in her off-hours. Her successes were not by accident and relied upon lucky. Just as the famous female author Dinglin (丁玲) said: The blooming flowers are flourishing while people only envy and enjoy their present beauty, but their buds were soaked in struggling tears and were caught in the rain for sacrificing (成功的花,人们只惊羡她现时的明艳,然而当初她的芽儿,浸透了奋斗的泪泉,洒遍了牺牲的血雨). Rome was not built in a day(冰冻三尺,非一日之功).

Hedy Lamarr was such a beautiful woman-flower blooming in the palace of science.
